Student Affairs

2007 Virtual Case Study (VCS) Scenario

The Director of Residence Life feels the summer training program for student resident assistants (RAs) has been rather blasé the past few years. The RAs have been restless during significant chunks of the week long training program and tardiness to sessions has been on the rise. For this coming year, he wants to spice things up a bit.

You are part of a team the Director has assembled with the task of creating two 1-3 minute digital videos that could be incorporated into the summer training modules. You and your teammates were chosen for your creativity, enthusiasm, and willingness to do things "outside the box." He understands that not everyone within your group is from the Department of Residence Life. In fact, he purposefully wanted input from non-Res Life personnel.

Your task is simple--produce the two aforementioned videos that incorporate some aspect of RA training. These could include, but are not limited to:

  • Conflict Mediation/Resolution
  • General counseling information
  • Diversity issues
  • Alcohol and substance abuse
  • Mental health issues
  • Leadership skills
  • Decision-making
  • Communication skills
  • Programming basics

The videos can be serious, humorous or a combination of the two. In order to make this project more interesting, the Director has put together a number of teams from around the campus and will award cash prizes for the most creative and most educational videos. In addition, since the Director's favorite television program is "American Idol," he will incorporate some type of audience participation in choosing the winners.
