Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Student Accessibility Services, the Assistant Director will be responsible for the following:

  • Employ knowledge of post-secondary education compliance requirements contained in the ADA and Section 504 and incorporate principles of social justice, equity, and disability advocacy.
  • Consult with the Director, as needed, to complete the eligibility determination and plan for reasonable and appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Review disability-related documentation from medical providers and determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations
  • Coordinate SAS participation in new student orientations.
  • Meet with prospective students and families and advise faculty and program administrators regarding general and customized course-related and living needs of students with disabilities.
  • Manage student employees and part-time proctors.
  • Participate in strategic initiatives for and within SAS.
  • Contribute to efforts to maintain the consistency of language imparting the SAS vision.
  • Guide content management for web, print, and digital materials.
  • Oversee, with staff colleagues, official office communication on all social media.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant area of study or comparable education and experience.
  • Relevant professional experience, typically two or more years.
  • Outstanding counseling, referral, and problem-solving skills and abilities. Excellent organizational and detailed record-keeping skills.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Successful programming and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills and resourcefulness.
  • Technical skills, including fluent use of Word, Excel, Outlook, and Google applications.
  • Ability to work within a diverse setting with faculty, student affairs staff, students, and family members and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with students with disabilities.
  • Master’s degree in higher education, special education, psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field and at least two years of progressive experience working in a diverse student affairs setting.
  • Working knowledge of disability laws such as ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology resources and the evaluation criteria used to determine reasonable accommodations.
  • Experience and understanding of student development.
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues related to the field of Accessibility Services.
  • Experience with adaptive technology.
  • Experience supervising student workers.
  • Experience responding to students in crisis.
  • Prior experience with database management systems such as Symplicity’s Advocate and Accommodate.

Conditions of Employment

  • Serve as a member of the Dean of Students on-call crisis team.
  • This is a restricted position, subject to the continued availability of funding.

JOB DUTIES

Description

Percentage Of Time 50%

  • Coordinate operations of the SAS Testing Center including supervising staff and overseeing operations (provision of services such as note-takers, testing proctors, and adaptive equipment for students with disabilities).
  • Supervise the 20 hours per week Masters or Doctoral-level Graduate Assistant.
  • Hire, train, evaluate, and supervise student employees and part-time proctors, including management of employees and their schedules.
  • Meet with students by appointment.
  • Review confidential medical, psychiatric, IEPs, 504 plans, and other documentation associated with disabilities.
  • Determine reasonable accommodations based on disability.
  • Continue to work with students in the interactive process to determine whether other alternatives are available to meet the student’s needs.
  • Process accommodation requests and issue letters to faculty and staff in a timely manner.
  • Manage a caseload of students seeking and receiving accommodations.
  • Assist in the development, management, and assessment of SAS programs and initiatives.

Percentage Of Time 25%

  • Develop, manage, track, and evaluate the exam scheduling program for approximately 2600 exams for students with testing accommodations, including supervising the daily scheduling and collecting exams, hiring and supervising proctors, and coordinating the delivery of exams upon completion.
  • Oversee test proctoring services, including securing exams, communicating with faculty, managing booking requests, and student requests for additional overflow spaces.
  • Maintain updated information and develop data reports in the Accommodate database.

Percentage Of Time 15%

  • Receive and resolve Care reports as assigned in a timely and effective manner.
  • Communicate as appropriate with faculty, students, parents/guardians, and campus partners.
  • Serve as a member of the Dean of Students on-call crisis team.
  • Respond and follow up on crisis-level concerns, determining the level of crisis and immediate response needed.
  • Represent the unit at standing committees or consultation meetings in the absence of the Director or as delegated by the Director.
  • Work collaboratively with the Dean of Students Office and others on campus to support campus-wide programs and events including convocation, orientation, and commencement.
  • Assist with data and assessment efforts.

Percentage Of Time 10%

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of the SAS Summer Bridge Program. Represent SAS and Student Success during new student orientation, departmental meetings, or other events as assigned.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of federal and state regulations concerning students with disabilities in higher education by engaging in professional development opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
