Position Purpose

 

Under the supervision of the Custodial Services Manager, the custodian shall clean and maintain the interior areas of campus buildings to established standards of hygiene. This position requires continuous movement and mobility. Reasonable accommodations will be made to facilitate the performance of this work by persons with physical or mental impairments. This position is included in the SCU Maintenance bargaining unit. Union membership is a condition of employment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

• Clean floors daily: Manually remove large pieces of litter from floors. Sweep and mop all hard surface floors. Vacuum carpets (using vacuum that weighs about 17 lbs.). Spot clean soiled areas on carpets using chemicals appropriate to the stain.

 

• Vacuum and spot shampoo carpets, fabrics and other surfaces. Apply chemicals for the removal of paint, oil, gum, food and other stains from floors, carpets, fabrics and other building surfaces.

 

• Wash walls, furnishing and baseboards: Using the cleaners specified, wipe down surfaces. Spot clean soiled areas using chemicals appropriate for the stain

 

• Dust, polish and/or wash furniture, fixtures, ledges, woodwork and metal surfaces: Using the specified cleaners, wipe down surfaces. Spot cleaning soiled areas using chemicals appropriate for the stain Waste receptacles: Empty waste receptacles and dispose of trash; recycle cans, glass and paper, breakdown boxes.

 

• Restrooms: Clean and maintain restrooms. Using the cleaners specified, wash and disinfect sinks, commodes, showers and bathtubs

 

• Water Fountains: Clean, disinfect and polish water fountains

 

• Replenish supplies to ensure that adequate amounts of cleaner and appropriate tools are available to clean designated areas during any one shift.

 

• Record and report all building safety and maintenance needs which are observed during the shift.

 

Other Duties

 

• Housing Building Support: Support the custodial needs of the campus Residence Halls including services such as: cleaning common areas, cleaning residential rooms, units or apartments during the summer and as requested.

 

• Event Support: Support campus events by providing custodial support services which could include restroom cleaning, waste removal and supply refreshing

 

• Project Support: Support custodial projects on campus including exterior window washing from the ground utilizing extending tools to 9 feet, detail cleaning, residential cleaning or other assigned projects

 

• Emergency Support: Support the campus in the case of an emergency by providing custodial services out of routine schedules.

 

Qualifications:

 

• A minimum of two years of experience as a professional custodian.

 

• Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.

 

• Ability to move and operate cleaning equipment, especially floor cleaning equipment, through manually pushing/pulling up to the specified weight limit.

 

• Ability to move/relocate furniture, both mobile and stationary, for cleaning purposes, up to the approved weight limit especially in classroom, conference rooms, corridors and other flexible spaces to ensure cleaning is completed.

 

• Ability to bend, kneel, reach and stoop in order to reach surfaces from floor level to eye level

 

• Ability to safely perform work on an elevated surface such as a ladder or stool.

 

• Shall follow all SCU Safety Programs such as, but not limited to:

 

• Asbestos Program

 

• Back Injury Prevention

 

• Electric Vehicle Safety Program

 

• Elevated Work Surfaces (aka: Ladders)

 

• Hazard Communication

 

• Injury and Illness Prevention Program

 

• Laboratory Safety

 

• Lead Program

 

• Personal Protective Equipment

 

• Comprehension of the English language to ensure your understanding of instructions, labels and other verbal and written communication pertinent to the job required.

 

• Must have the ability to learn, understand and remember building safety regulations.

 

• California driver's license is preferred

This mobile position requires virtually continuous motion during five eight (8)-hour shifts per week, with two 15-minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch each work day.
