General Statement of Duties:

The Assistant Director of Residence Life & Housing is responsible for the coordination and management of an engaging, supportive, and dynamic residential living learning environment in the University residence hall setting. Duties include primary leadership for one University residential area and possible supervision of a Residence Hall Directors, Graduate Hall Directors and Graduate Assistants.

Provides leadership for departmental initiatives in the area of operations or residential education. Typical residential education duties may include development and implementation of living-learning communities, oversight of student academic success and support efforts, and delivery of programming for students residing within the University residence hall setting. Provides direction to the Faculty-In-Residence.  Typical operational duties include supervision and oversight to front desk, turnover processes, room reservations, summer camp operations, and facility inventories.

The Assistant Director is responsible for ongoing student development activities and behavior management, building management and operations, staff training and supervision, summer camps, and housing administrative functions. The position is a 12-month, full-time position. The position includes an optional furnished apartment. Reports to the Director of Residence Life and Housing.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the activities of one apartment complex
  • Possible supervision of Residence Hall Directors (RHDs), Graduate Assistants, and/or Graduate Hall Directors (GHDs)
  • Provide hall director responsibilities within one residence hall environment, including the supervision student paraprofessional staff (RAs).
  • Design, implement, and evaluate programming efforts in collaboration with administrative departments and academic units across the institution to benefit and develop resident students.
  • Counsels resident students on personal and academic issues and adjudicates offenses of the MSU Student Code of Conduct and Housing Handbook.
  • Participates in the selection, training, and supervision of paraprofessional and hourly student staff.
  • Performs on-call duty as scheduled for the residential housing community.

Additional Information

Must be available to work some evenings and weekends.

This position requires the ability to work well with diverse populations and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community. Must have the ability to teach, direct, guide and mediate; a participatory management style; and counseling skills for a wide range of student and staff concerns. Requires skill working with multicultural groups and individuals. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to identify and organize tasks, prioritize duties, and effectively complete the many components of the job and the ability to work under pressure and uneven time constraints. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated commitment to diversity.

Regular reliable attendance is required.  Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act. Must be available some nights and weekends. Must periodically serve on a standby or on-call basis. Designated as a Responsible Employee as outlined by Title IX. This position is designated as security sensitive (Mod)
