The MICAH Alumni Mentor (AM) position is responsible for assisting the https://www.micahfellows.org/ Directors in the supervision and advising of 6 MICAH Fellows. The MICAH Fellows are 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students who have substantial experience in the community and have demonstrated a capacity for leadership.
GOALS OF THE POSITION:
• Help fellows develop a strong, consistent, deliberate practice of adaptive leadership.
• Build supportive relationships with each MICAH Fellow.
• Learn about and build relationships with partner organizations.
• Personify the mission and values of the program through consistent interaction with fellows.
• Help create a brave - safe physical and emotional container that will enable fellows to productively challenge themselves.
• Role model professionalism, community and teamwork
TIME COMMITMENT & RESPONSIBILITIES:
MICAH Timeline (at a glance)
• May 30th - June 2nd MICAH Planning Lunch and Orientation
• June 3rd - July 25th MICAH Summer Fellowship
• July 26th - 28th Closing Retreat & Debrief
The Alumni Mentor position requires approximately on average 5-8 hours per week for 8 weeks (from May 30th to
July 28th) for approximately 80 total hours. The time commitment and responsibilities include the
following:
• Assist in coordination and facilitation of building a learning community sessions, and orientation
• Weekly Community Night with MICAH Fellows and Program Director (time TBD ex: Tuesdays 6:30PM-9:00PM) (2.5 hours)
• Ability to be physically present with students at USD or SMC, following appropriate COVID-19 safety protocols
• Review and offer feedback on Fellow's assigned written work related to Research/Community Nights/Weekly Engagement (1.5 hours)
• 1:1 advising with 6 MICAH fellows (2 hours / week on average)
• Weekly check-in with Program Directors via phone or google hangout (approx. 1.5 hours)
• Assist in coordination and facilitation of debrief, closing retreat and celebration
• Support fellows as they develop and live by community covenant
• Advise, support and challenge fellows
• Encourage students to assume responsibility for their actions and to be considerate of the rights and freedoms of others
• Assist in instructing and supporting fellows as they learn adaptive leadership theory and adopt MICAH immersion approach
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
• MICAH Alumni (preferred)
• Prior experience in community development / engagement preferred.
• Familiarity with Student Development theory.
• Familiarity with Adaptive Leadership theory.
• Familiarity with anti-racism and anti-oppression pedagogy.
• Ability to work independently and successfully manage small group dynamics with close supervision.
• Strong communication skills.
• Understanding of and commitment to the mission and purpose of Fellowship Program and the Catholic, liberal arts based Universities (USD and Saint Mary's).
• Ability to be integrated, as determined, into the ongoing and emergent responsibilities of the program.
• San Diego candidate: English/Spanish required
COMPENSATION:
$2,000 total paid bi-weekly or after the completion of the program (July 28th).
