The associate dean of students will enhance the learning environment through student involvement in co-curricular and extra-curricular programming, assessment and program review, and leadership development. The associate dean of students must ben an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader who will develop, implement, and maintain programs that support students in their acadeic pursuits, campus life, and civic and social responsibilities. The associate dean of students will engage directly with students and provide strategic supervision, leadership, and programmatic, budget, and operational oversight for the following areas: Student Activities, Housing and Residence Life, Student Critical Incidents, Student Affairs Administration, and Student Leadership Initiatives.

The associate dean of students is a member of the leadership team in student affairs and will assist the dean of students in shaping the future of the Davis & Elkins College student experience by implementing initiatives outlined in the goals and objectives of the Davis & Elkins College Strategic Plan.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Residence Life: Responsible for managing and promoting a comprehensive residence life program. Coordinate and sustain a residence hall activity program focusing on student leadership and involvement, faculty involvement, service learning, and outdoor programming. Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate the Residence Life staff (resident directors and resident associates). Work collaboratively with the Student Life staff, faculty and students to design and implement strategies that better integrate academic programming to enhance the campus culture and educational outcomes of students. Perform regular walk-a-rounds and inspections of housing facilities. Work with the Physical Plant to coordinate and direct maintenance and custodial requirements.
  • Student Critical Incidents: Responsible for serving as a point person on diverse incidents involving student behaviors and issues of concern. Lead and coordinate the office-wide, on-call response system, in collaboration with the College's Office of Public Safety. Serve on and provide guidance for the campus-wide Care Team.
  • Student Housing: Responsible for oversight of eRezLife housing software. Assign new student housing. Runs the housing lottery for returning students every spring semester. Coordinates billing with the student accounts coordinator in the business office.
  • Student Affairs Administration: Works with the dean on the development and implementation of policies, processes, and procedures relevant to student life and administration of the Student Life area. He/she also guides the publication and distribution of Volume VI, Student Life Policies, of the Davis & Elkins College Policy Manual, and other appropriate policy documents. Function as a daily resource and problem solver, as well as an information and resource broker to the general Davis & Elkins College population. Coordinate/participate in staff meetings, assessment efforts, retention activities and serve on other key College-wide committees (Preliminary Response Team, Student Success and Retention Team, and Drug and Alcohol Compliance Committee). Work with the Student Life staff to provide quality customer-oriented services within the unit culture and philosophy (rooted in assessment and best practices). Participates in the development and execution of the annual New Student Orientation. Assists with all large, annual events including but not limited to Family Weekend, Homecoming Weekend, Déjà vu Weekend, and Graduation. Responsible for other administrative projects as assigned by the dean of students.  
  • Student Conduct: Responsible for the student discipline process. Maintains documentation related to the student discipline process.
  • Student Leadership Initiatives: Works with the dean of students, the director of career services, and the student employment coordinator to guide and facilitate leadership initiatives.
  • Summer Programming: Provides support for the residential needs of summer school and summer programming.
  • Other duties as assigned by the dean of students.
