Serves as an Insurance and Billing Associate for the Towson University Health Center, a multi-practitioner college health facility. This position includes moderately complex accounting and clerical procedures involved in medical billing and coding, and responsibility for performing a variety of medical insurance and related financial record keeping, use of medical software, as well as excellent customer service skills. Also serves as the back-up personnel for the front desk at the Health Center, which includes scheduling appointments, answering phones and invoicing patient charges. 

 

Responsibilities and Duties

 

Billing and Insurance:

Verifies and inputs patient health insurance coverage; reconciles payments and balance bills the appropriate accounts to maximize collections; collects and compiles electronic claims and interfaces information to student health insurance companies through third party billing company; communicates with insurance companies regarding unpaid/underpaid claims and denials; and provides customer service to Health Center patients regarding insurance and billing questions and issues.

 

Electronic Health Records and Medical Software:

Uses electronic medical record system for updating and retrieving information regarding patient demographics and insurance eligibility from files and databases; cross-trained to perform medical records duties during busy times at the Health Center.

 

Front Desk:

Serves as the back-up medical receptionist at the front desk of the Health Center; schedules appointments, checks patients in and out, invoices patient charges, answers phones and provides the first departmental contact for all patients, guests, and visitors.

 

Qualifications and Skills

 

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of accounting clerical experience.
  • Ability to perform moderately complex accounting and clerical duties. 
  • Knowledge of customer service standards when dealing with the public, employees, patients and parents.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, multi-line phone systems, copiers, scanners and fax machines. 

 

Preferred:

  • Associate's Degree
  • Certified Medical Coding Professional Certificate.
  • Knowledgeable in the application of medical office practices, procedures and equipment. 
  • Experience or familiarity with insurance payments, insurance verification and explanation of benefits.  
  • Experience with medical scheduling/billing software. 
  • Familiarity with HIPAA policies and standards related to the confidentiality and security of medical records.
  • Experience working in a health care facility, and experience with electronic medical records. 

 

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

 Salary and Benefits 

$35,186 annually and full University benefits that include annual leave, up to 15 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
