The Department of History and Philosophy at State University of New York at Old Westbury seeks to hire a full-time Lecturer for the 2024/2025 academic year (Fall 2024 and Spring 2025) to teach courses on Asian History and Culture.  This is a one-year appointment.  Candidates for this temporary position will teach four (4) 4-credit courses per semester.  The candidate will be expected to attend department meetings, assist with departmental events and participate in student advising.  Applicants who are ABD or hold a Ph.D. in History or closely allied field are strongly preferred.  Regional specialization within Asia is open but candidates should be able to teach survey courses in Chinese, East Asian and/or South Asian history.  Ability to teach one or more of the following specialties is a plus: Transregional courses in topics such as migration, empire, among others; Eastern religions and philosophy; or Environmental history.

The Department of History and Philosophy houses a B.A. in history, a B.A. in Environmental Studies and a B.A. in the combined areas of philosophy and religion.  We also offer content courses in our School of Education's Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Adolescence Education Social Studies. 

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Master's in History or closely related field.
  • Specialization or documented research interest in Asian History or Culture (East and/or South Asia preferred).
  • Teaching experience at the college level in the candidate's field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ABD or PhD in History or closely related  field.

Salary range: up to $60,000.00, commensurate with education and experience (plus location pay $3,400.00)
