The State University of New York at Old Westbury is seeking to fill the position of Chief of Police.  The Chief of Police will be responsible for the administration and efficient operation of a university police department and oversees all security on campus and also oversees safety and security activities on campus during rentals of college facilities.  Supervises the maintenance of law and order on campus and the enforcement of Federal, State, and local laws as well as the rules and regulations of SUNY and the campus; oversees the total operation of University Police Department manpower to include: the Deputy Chief of Police, Investigator, Lieutenants, Police Officers, Civilian Dispatchers, and civilian employees; initiates and controls appropriate preventive and security initiatives to control crime on campus; acts as a liaison with Federal, State, and local law enforcement officials and agencies to assure a mutual understanding of policies; oversees the scheduling of personnel in the university police department to assure their efficient deployment; acts as a liaison with the SUNY Commissioner of University Police, oversees the training of university police personnel; oversees the recruitment, hiring and background checks for new or transferring employees prior to employment; oversees in-service training as needed and required; implements department's community policing strategies; prepares department budget; maintains liaison with the campus administration to assure the accomplishment of university objectives in relation to the University Police Department. This is a Management Confidential position and is FLSA exempt, not eligible for the overtime provisions of FLSA.

 


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, police science, public administration or related field.
  • Certification as a sworn police officer in New York State. 
  • A minimum of ten (10) years' experience and training in law enforcement, criminal justice, security, and related areas (e.g., traffic and crowd control, parking, etc.) including a record of progressive leadership and management responsibility with a minimum of five (5) years' experience in a supervisory role with senior/command experience as a sworn officer.
  • Demonstrated commitment and the ability to work with and provide service to a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and constituents in support of campus and department mission.
  • Emergency Management background and training.
  • A demonstrated ability in conducting and supervising both criminal and internal investigations.
  • A strong service orientation and a demonstrated ability to work in a diverse multicultural and complex community.
  • A demonstrated commitment to training and staff development.
  • Familiarity with NYS police accreditation program.
  • Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
  • Experience with supervising employees who work under negotiated union contracts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Previous command experience in a leadership position above the rank of Lieutenant in the State University of New York Police System.
  • Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Police Instructor Certification.
  • Familiarity with NYS Civil Service Regulations.
  • A demonstrated ability to work successfully with other college disciplines and exhibit a creative and positive approach to supporting student social events and the residential population.
  • Experience with Title IX regulations, federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
  • Experience in supervising various administrative functions, including quartermaster and fleet maintenance responsibilities.
