The State University of New York at Old Westbury - Division of Student Affairs is seeking a Learning Specialist. This role serves as part of the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (OSSD) and is an integral part of providing services to students registered with the office. The position reports to the Director of OSSD and will work collaboratively with campus partners to provide students with high quality support and opportunities to excel in their college experience. This is a full-time, twelve (12) month position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide 1:1 targeted intervention with students, which may include, classroom learning strategies, study strategies, executive functioning skills and self-advocacy.
  • Review student Individualized Education Programs and Neuropsychological reports to assess student academic strengths and weaknesses.
  • Assist students in developing individualized educational goals and monitor progress towards those goals, and summarizing progress at the end of each semester.
  • Collaborate with the OSSD staff to facilitate accommodations access for students.
  • Provide leadership and supervision of the OSSD peer mentor program, including but not limited to recruitment and onboarding of peer mentors and creation and maintenance of the peer mentoring program policies and procedures.
  • Communicate with students via email to manage appointments and check-in and maintain and manage cohort data.
  • Consult with faculty, staff and other relevant departments regarding students in their caseload.
  • Make appropriate referrals to on and off campus resources related to the students' learning goals.
  • Provide a safe, warm, patient, judgment-free and confidential environment to students with disabilities who are often reluctant to use accommodations due to stigma.
  • Create weekly content for academic geared workshops.
  • Coordinate with OSSD staff to facilitate campus wide events.
  • Provide outreach to new and prospective students and families at college events.
  • Participate in summer orientation for new OSSD students.
  • Assist the OSSD director in program assessments, yearly data collection, analysis and reporting.
  • Maintain student records, notes and correspondence in Accommodate Student Management Software.
  • Coordinate with other OSSD staff to arrange use of Assistive Technology for tests.
  • Evenings and weekends required in support of special projects and events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 


Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Disability Studies or related field.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience providing academic coaching, executive function coaching or related experience with students with disabilities, especially students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, in both individual and group settings.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to individuals with disabilities.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to exhibit excellent judgment and discretion, while always maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, ethically and empathetically with a diverse population of students, faculty/administrators, and community partners.
  • Proficient computing skills are required.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends in support of special projects and events.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a higher education disability service setting.
  • Knowledge of Accommodate or other student management system.
