Franklin, MA United StatesThe Joan Phelps Palladino School of Dance at Dean College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance for a term appointment for a 10-month appointment beginning September 1, 2025.
We seek a student-centered, community-minded dance artist with a focus on contemporary dance forms. The ideal candidate will be confident teaching studio technique, dance history, and dance composition, and will approach these subjects with cultural fluency and academic rigor.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong technical and creative foundation in contemporary dance practice, along with interest or experience in somatic methods and/or culturally rooted dance traditions. Interdisciplinary approaches and artists whose work blends scholarship, choreography, and community engagement are especially encouraged to apply.
This position offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a thriving, collaborative dance community that values diversity, inquiry, and innovation in dance training and scholarship.
This position is a one-year appointment for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Position responsibilities include:
- Teach 5 undergraduate courses per semester in areas including:
- Intermediate to advanced studio technique
- Dance history
- Dance composition
- Other related coursework in your area(s) of expertise
- Choreograph, restage, or perform one concert work per semester as part of the teaching load.
- Use experiential learning strategies that prepare students for professional careers.
- Mentor students in academic and career planning, including graduate study preparation.
- Hold office hours and provide individualized student support.
- Contribute to curriculum development and the School's artistic vision.
- Actively participate in School and Program meetings, student recruitment, and New Student Orientation.
- Promote culturally responsive, inclusive, and equitable teaching practices.
Preparation, Training and Experience:
- MFA or PhD in Dance or related field required.
- Substantial and sustained professional work in dance performance, choreography, and/or scholarship.
- Demonstrated success teaching dance at the college or conservatory level.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in dance.
- Expertise in contemporary, non-Western, and/or diasporic dance forms.
- Comfort and interest in teaching dance history and composition.
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student-centered learning.
- Proficiency with digital tools and platforms such as Canvas.
