The hours of this position are Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm with alternate work schedules during breaks, intersessions, and winter and summer sessions.

The University Libraries empower intellectual exploration through building connections, collections, and community. As an active partner in the University’s academic programs, the libraries are a major contributor to WCU’s core mission of student success. The faculty members serve as both instructors of information literacy and stewards of library resources. The staff members support the operation of the libraries whether it be assisting patrons at help desks, making the various library resources ready for patron use, or providing access to library technology.
The Student Employment Program Library Technician coordinates the University Libraries student employee program and works collaboratively with supervisors to provide valuable work experience, build practical skills, and foster career readiness. This position also schedules and supervises part-time Help Desk library assistants and volunteers; assists patrons at library service desks; works with both faculty and staff to ensure quality service is provided; and supports the maintenance of library collections.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate supervisory experience; excellent customer service skills; knowledge of library workflows and Library Service Platforms; the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a diverse campus community including faculty, staff and students while contributing to a positive and professional work environment.
Responsibilities include:
- Coordinate student employment, training, and development opportunities within the University Libraries
- Coordinate student employment policies, procedures, training, evaluation, and recruitment processes through collaboration with all University Libraries student supervisors
- Maintain the University Libraries Student Handbook
- Assist with the onboarding of new student employee supervisors
- Support the hiring, onboarding and supervision of part-time library assistants including evaluations, goalsetting, timesheet approval and work planning and delegation
- Oversee the supervision of volunteers and coordinate with program contacts
- Coordinate and communicate schedules and work with volunteers and job coaches
- Provide feedback on volunteer work performance
- Opens and/or closes building as scheduled
- Staff the Help Desks as scheduled
- Answer and refer questions in person, over the phone, chat, and email
- Assist with informational, directional, and known item inquiries and records statistics on all interactions
- Circulate library materials using current library software
- Assist users with utilizing services and collections
- Assist with the basic maintenance of printers, scanners, and other library equipment
- Accept payments
- Provides support for the Library Stacks Technician to maintain collections including shifting, collection inventory, and removal of withdrawn materials

Minimum Qualifications
- Four years of library-clerical work including two years of advanced library clerical work comparable to Library Assistant II, and graduation from high school OR
- Two years of advanced library clerical work, and an associate degree or equivalent training with major course work in library science OR
- Bachelor's degree
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of library techniques, procedures, and working tools used in accessing, cataloging, circulating; and maintaining library materials
- Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in bibliography preparation and the use of library research materials
- Knowledge of reader comprehension and interest levels of library patrons
- Skill in the application of the techniques and procedures used in cataloging
- Ability to apply library methods and principles in circulation and providing reader services
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library personnel and the public
Preferred Qualifications

- Experience using Alma or related Library Service Platforms
