Dean College's School of Liberal Arts is looking for a dynamic, experienced, student-centered educator to teach during the Fall 2025 semester. The College seeks Adjunct Faculty who focus on experiential learning and active engagement in their classrooms. Adjuncts chosen to teach at Dean create a compelling and professional learning environment for students of diverse learning backgrounds.

We are seeking an adjunct instructor for PHY 141: General Physics I. PHY 141 is a 4-credit class that meets for lecture for 2.5 hours/week and one 2-hour lab. The adjunct pay rate is $5500 ($1100 per contact hour). The course is scheduled as a hybrid course with lecture held online synchronously twice a week and one in-person lab each week. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach. The Program Coordinator provides a course charter with course objectives as well as sample syllabi. The Program will also provide copies of the labs that have been done in the past.  All faculty are expected to make active use of the learning management system (Canvas) at least at a minimum level established by the College.

 

Course Description for PHY 141: General Physics I is the following:
This course is a non-calculus introduction to fundamental principles of physics. Topics include: the use of vectors, Newton's Laws, the relationship between energy, work, force, power, momentum, rotational motion, angular momentum, torque and an introduction of thermodynamics, wave motion and sound. Lecture and laboratory meet separately each week. The laboratory emphasizes application of the principles of physics and basics techniques in data collection and problem solving. Prerequisite: a grade of "C" or better in MTH 151 or high math course. Lab fee: $75. Offered on an as-needed basis in the fall semester.


The course schedule for PHY 141: General Physics I is as follows - 

  • Lecture Tuesday and Thursday online synchronously from 2:00pm-3:15pm.
  • Lab Monday in person from 6:00pm-7:50pm.

 

Position responsibilities include:

  • Deliver and assess course learning objectives and outcomes consistent with the course charter both online synchronously and in person meetings each week as scheduled.
  • Hold laboratory sections that follow the assigned labs each week. 
  • Direct students through writing lab reports or lab assignments.
  • Follow all lab safety protocols and require students to adhere to lab safety protocols.
  • Hold at least one office hour each week.
  • Be responsive and supportive of students' learning and concerns or questions.
  • Use Canvas to post course materials and assignment deadlines, post grades on the gradebook in Canvas and enter attendance on the Canvas attendance log.

 

Preparation, Training and Experience:

  • Master's degree in physics or a related field is required; PhD in a related discipline is preferred.
  • Experience teaching at the college level in person is preferred; experience teaching first and second year undergraduates is preferred.
  • Strong computer skills are required.
  • Experience using technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy is required.
  • Ability and willingness to be responsive and supportive to students through college online resources and digital tools is required.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Canvas, our learning management system, and classroom media is required.
  • Expertise in learner-centered teaching is required.
  • Experience and ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles, required.
