Dean College's School of Liberal Arts is looking for a dynamic, experienced, student-centered educator to teach in person during the Fall 2025 semester. The College seeks Adjunct Faculty who focus on experiential learning and active engagement in their classrooms. Adjuncts chosen to teach at Dean create a compelling and professional learning environment for students of diverse learning backgrounds.

 

We are seeking an adjunct instructor for BIO 168: The Science of Food: What Are You Eating? BIO 168 is a 3-credit class that meets for lecture for 2.5 hours/week. The adjunct pay rate is $3,300/section. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach. The Biology program provides a course charter with course objectives as well as sample syllabi. All faculty are expected to make active use of the learning management system (Canvas) at least at a minimum level established by the College.

 

Course Description for BIO168: The Science of Food: What Are You Eating?:

Trillions of microorganisms live in your gut without which you could not survive. Cheese, yogurt, beer and bread: What do they all have in common? This course will provide an interactive forum to discuss the science involved in the food we produce and eat. Topics may include the following: a brief review of human nutrition, a description and discussion of food organisms in the modern diets, chemical reactions involved in food preparation and the environmental impact of dietary choices. Prerequisites: ENG 111 and Core Mathematics Requirement. This course fulfills the Core Distribution Natural Sciences and Mathematics requirement.

There is 1 section for a BIO 168 lecture available. The section is scheduled as follows: Tuesday/Thursday 12:30pm-1:45pm.


Position responsibilities include:

  • Deliver and assess course learning objectives and outcomes consistent with the course charter in person for the two assigned 75-minute class meetings each week.
  • Hold at least one office hour each week.
  • Be responsive and supportive of students learning and concerns or questions.
  • Use Canvas to post course materials and assignment deadlines, post grades on the gradebook in Canvas and enter attendance on the Canvas attendance log.
  • Assess student learning in the classroom.

 


Preparation, Training and Experience:

  • Master's degree in biology or a related field is required; PhD in a related discipline is preferred.
  • Experience teaching at the college level in person is required; experience teaching first and second year undergraduates is preferred.
  • Strong computer skills are required.
  • Experience using technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy is required.
  • Ability and willingness to be responsive and supportive to students through college online resources and digital tools is required.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Canvas, our learning management system, and classroom media is required.
  • Expertise in learner-centered teaching is required.
  • Experience and ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles, required.
