The Director of Spirit Programs / Head Cheer Coach is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of Saint Mary's College's spirit initiatives, including the cheer team, dance team, pep band, mascot program, and Gael Force.The director will also serve as the head coach of the cheer and dance team. This position will also assist the marketing and external operations team in the promotion of athletic events through campus and community outreach efforts. This role encompasses coaching, recruitment, program administration, budget management, and collaboration with marketing and fan engagement efforts to enhance school spirit and community involvement.
Requirements
1. Lead and manage the daily operations of all spirit programs, including cheer, dance, pep band, mascot, and student spirit organizations.
2. Serve as the head coach for the cheer team, overseeing practices, performances, and competitions. Responsible for teaching and choreographing cheer and dance routines for both programs.
Ensure all coaching staff maintain current safety certifications to uphold the highest standards of athlete safety and compliance. Promote and foster a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship by team members. Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the field. Promote the physical and mental well-being of all program participants.
3. Meet all recruitment goals set for the program by the Director of Athletics; including roster minimums for Cheerleading (24) and Competitive Dance (12). Regularly attend recruiting events and competitions throughout the year. Recruit and select qualified prospective and current students who have the ability to compete in the classroom and athletically. Actively seek out and encourage a diverse group of prospects and assist them through the application process. Work collaboratively with Student-Athlete Services and the Admissions Office staff to qualify and process prospects in a timely and efficient manner.
4. Responsible for the academic performance of team members including graduation from the College. Support, monitor, and evaluate the academic performance of the student-athletes participating in spirit programs.
5. Develop and manage budgets for all spirit programs, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with departmental goals. Collaborate with the equipment manager to order, inventory and care for all athletic equipment and uniforms. Develop and implement a comprehensive team schedule that includes participation in local, regional, and national competitions. Coordinate and manage appearances of spirit groups at athletic events, campus functions, and community engagements.
6. Collaborate with Athletics Marketing and Fan Experience teams to promote events and enhance fan engagement.Assist with alumni events, fundraising for the team and promotional events as requested. Attend events as requested, fulfill speaking engagements and support athletic fundraising. All fundraising activities must be approved by the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and be in compliance with the College, NCAA and West Coast Conference rules and guidelines. Work towards hitting fundraising budget goals.
7. Supervise and evaluate the day-to-day activities of assistant coaches, student leaders, choreographers and other personnel assigned to the spirit programs. Provide an annual written evaluation of assistant coaches to the sport supervisor.
Know, recognize, and comply with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the College and its employees, and the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (including, but not limited to, NCAA Bylaw, Article 11 and its requirement to report all athletically-related income and benefits from sources outside of the College to the President) and of the West Coast Conference as now constituted or as may be amended in the future. Supervise and ensure that any assistants and any other employees and/or volunteers for whom you are administratively responsible comply with the aforesaid policies, rules and regulations. Immediately advise the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics if you have reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees or students, have occurred or will occur.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree PREFERRED: Master's Degree
Experience: (years required and applicable field of experience):
Cheerleading Coaching Experience (College, High School, All-Star)
A strong network and connections within the cheer community
Experience in collegiate or professional cheer
Skills/Abilities: (e.g. computer skills, written & verbal skills, trades, laws, procedures, technical) Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with all levels of coaches, administrators and staff. Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities. Proficiency with word software and database management. Team-oriented individual with the ability to take initiative. Ability to represent the Department and College in a professional manner to on and off campus constituencies, including alumni, friends, corporate partners and donors. Ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion.
Licenses & Certifications (e.g. CPA, RN, etc.):
REQUIRED:First-Aid training and certification
PREFERRED: USA Cheer Safety and Risk Management Certification
Other Requirements: (e.g. travel, weekend/evening work) Must be able to travel and work weekends and nights.
