Dean College's School of Liberal Arts is looking for a dynamic, experienced, student-centered educator to teach Social Stratification & Inequality during the Fall 2025 semester. The College seeks Adjunct Faculty who focus on experiential learning and active engagement in their classrooms. Adjuncts chosen to teach at Dean create a compelling and professional learning environment for students of diverse learning backgrounds.

 

We are seeking an adjunct instructor for SOC255: Social Stratification & Inequality. SOC255 is a 3-credit class that meets for 2.5 hours/week.  The adjunct pay rate is $3,300/section. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach. The sociology program provides a course charter with course objectives as well as sample syllabi. All faculty are expected to make active use of the learning management system (Canvas) at least at a minimum level established by the College.

 

The course description is as follows: This course explores inequality in the United States within a global framework. Through an intersectional lens, the class focuses on the major dimensions of social inequality: class, race and ethnicity, sex and gender, sexuality, and disability. It explores the causes, consequences, and lived experiences of inequality and stratification. The course will also examine theories of social inequality and historical and current attempts to reduce or eliminate it. Prerequisite: ENG 111. Offered every fall semester. This course fulfills the Core Distribution Social Sciences requirement.

 

There is one SOC-255 section available. It is scheduled to meet Monday/Wednesday/Friday 12:00pm-12:50pm.

 


Preparation, Training and Experience:

  • Master's degree in sociology or a related field is required; PhD in a related discipline is preferred.
  • Experience teaching at the college level in person is required; experience teaching first- and second-year undergraduates is preferred.
  • Strong computer skills is required.
  • Experience using technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy is required.
  • Ability and willingness to be responsive and supportive to students through college online resources and digital tools is required.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Canvas, our learning management system, and classroom media is required.
  • Expertise in learner-centered teaching is required.
  • Experience and ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles, required.
