Dean College's School of Liberal Arts is looking for a dynamic, experienced, student-centered educator to teach World History I, to 1500 during the Fall 2025 semester. The College seeks Adjunct Faculty who focus on experiential learning and active engagement in their classrooms. Adjuncts chosen to teach at Dean create a compelling and professional learning environment for students of diverse learning backgrounds.

 

We are seeking an adjunct instructor for HIS 151: World History I, to 1500. HIS-151 is a 3-credit class that meets for 2.5 hours/week.  The adjunct pay rate is $3,300/section. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach. The History program provides a course charter with course objectives as well as sample syllabi. All faculty are expected to make active use of the learning management system (Canvas) at least at a minimum level established by the College.

 

The course description is as follows: This course is devoted to the study of early human social development up to the era of globalization in the 1500s.  Main themes include the rise of cities and trade, empire building, cultural exchange, religion and philosophy, and technological development.  Much of the course focuses on the Mediterranean societies from the first cultures in Mesopotamia to Christian and Islamic dominance of Europe in the 1400s. Comparative regions include East Asia (China), Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Americas.  Students will encounter primary historical materials as well as scholarly accounts of the past. 

 

There is one HIS 151-section available. It is scheduled to meet Monday/Wednesday/Friday, 4:00pm-4:50pm.

 


Preparation, Training and Experience:

 

Master's degree in history or a related field is required; PhD in history is preferred.

    • Experience teaching at the college level in person is required; experience teaching first and second year undergraduates is preferred.
    • Strong computer skills is required.
    • Experience using technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy is required.
    • Ability and willingness to be responsive and supportive to students through college online resources and digital tools is required.
    • Experience with or willingness to learn Canvas, our learning management system, and classroom media is required.
    • Expertise in learner-centered teaching is required.
    • Experience and ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles, required.
