The Head Softball Coach is responsible for leading all aspects of the College's NCAA Division III softball program, fostering a competitive and inclusive team culture that aligns with the institution's mission and the values of Division III athletics. The Head Softball Coach will be responsible for building and sustaining a strong, competitive program that upholds the highest standards of integrity, athletic excellence, and academic success. This role emphasizes the holistic development of student-athletes, ensuring success both on the field and in the classroom while promoting sportsmanship, leadership, and personal growth. The Head Softball Coach is responsible for adhering to the policies, rules, and regulations of the NCAA, GNAC (Great Northeast Athletic Conference), and Dean College.

This is a 10-month, full-time, exempt position.


Position responsibilities include:

  • Identify, recruit, and retain student-athletes who align with the mission and values of Dean College while fostering a strong and positive team culture.
  • Ensure full compliance with NCAA, GNAC, and institutional policies by staying informed and adhering to all governing regulations.
  • Oversee all facets of a competitive NCAA Division III softball program, including strategic planning, communication, and execution.
  • Design and implement effective practice plans that develop player skills, team cohesion, and overall performance.
  • Support student-athletes' academic success by guiding them in their graduation plans, monitoring academic progress, and promoting accountability throughout the year.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Athletics & Recreation to coordinate game schedules and maintain a comprehensive record of contracts for each season.
  • Develop and manage an annual zero-based operational budget, ensuring responsible financial oversight throughout the fiscal year.
  • Partner with the NCAA Compliance Director to monitor eligibility requirements and maintain adherence to all compliance regulations.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of Dean College policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with institutional standards.
  • Purchase necessary equipment and supplies while following established departmental and institutional procurement policies.
  • Track and manage inventory of team-issued gear and uniforms, ensuring timely distribution and collection from student-athletes.
  • Pursue professional development by attending relevant coaching clinics, workshops, and industry events.
  • Coordinate with the Sports Information Director to manage team publicity, coordinate media coverage, and ensure timely submission of statistics to conference officials.
  • Work closely with the Athletic Training and Sports Medicine staff to prioritize the health and well-being of student-athletes.
  • Arrange all aspects of team travel, including transportation, lodging, and meal accommodations, ensuring logistical efficiency.
  • Submit detailed travel forms in advance of away games or events and communicate athlete absences to the athletics administration.
  • Engage with alumni, student organizations, college leadership, and community partners to enhance support and visibility for the program.
  • Partner with campus facilities personnel to oversee the maintenance and upkeep of the softball field.
  • Assist in the coordination and execution of game-day operations for designated sports.
  • Additional responsibility as assigned or required.
     

Managerial and Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • Hired and supervise part-time coaches.

Preparation, Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred. 
  • A minimum of three years of coaching experience at the collegiate level required.
  • Ability to recruit and retain quality student-athletes.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to effectively engage diverse audiences.
  • Ability and willingness to support Dean College's mission and to collaborate effectively within a team environment within the Athletics & Recreation Department. 
  • Strong commitment to the NCAA Division III philosophy.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Travel is required for recruiting and attending games.
