Position Summary:

Washington & Jefferson College seeks a dynamic and innovative Director for the Center for Student Well-Being to lead and oversee comprehensive wellness programs and services for students. The Director serves as a member of the Student Life Leadership Team and reports to the Vice President of Student Life & Dean of Students. In collaboration with key stakeholders across campus, this position will design, implement, and assess wellness initiatives that support students' academic success, personal growth, and resilience. In addition to providing clinical support, the director will manage partnerships with external vendors for crisis management and after-hours support. The Director ensures that the Center's policies, procedures, and services are consistent with the goals of the Division of Student Life, the mission of the College, and the standards of the profession.

Key Responsibilities:

Mental Health Leadership and Strategic Planning:

  • Provides vision and leadership in establishing and monitoring the scope and service delivery of the Counseling Center, ensuring its operation is consistent with national standards of practice.
  • Establishes policies and procedures for Center operations and communicates clearly with Center staff regarding policies, operations, scope of services, and standards of practice.
  • Plans and facilitates weekly staff meetings. Provides staff professional development through training opportunities, workshops, and professional resources.
  • In keeping with professional requirements, oversee the provision of time-efficient, culturally informed individual and group counseling and related services through training, consultation, supervision, and evaluation of the activities of the Center's clinical professionals and trainees.
  • Acts as senior consultant to staff and trainees regarding scope of services, challenging clinical situations, and assessment of risk.
  • Maintains licensure in good standing through continuing education activities and adherence to legal and professional ethics and standards.
  • Maintain a small caseload of individual clients.

Administrative and Management:

  • Oversees on-going assessment and evaluation of on campus and third-party contracted services, programs, and professional staff members.
  • Prepares annual and other reports, as needed.
  • Manage the Center's budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to meet student needs and program goals.

Crisis Management and After-Hours Support:

  • Coordinate with external vendors to ensure access to 24/7 crisis management services, providing immediate support for students in need outside of regular office hours.
  • Oversee the implementation and management of the college's partnership with the vendor, ensuring timely and effective response to student crises during nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Provide guidance and training to staff, faculty, and students on how to utilize the after-hours crisis support services and handle urgent student situations.

Collaboration and Outreach:

  • Build strong partnerships with campus departments such as Counseling Services, Residential Life, and Academic Affairs to provide comprehensive wellness services.
  • Engage with student groups and organizations to promote wellness initiatives and encourage student participation in health and wellness programs.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local healthcare providers, mental health agencies, and community organizations to support the overall well-being of students.

Supervision and Staff Development:

  • Recruits, trains, and supervises center's staff members.
  • Foster an inclusive, supportive work environment that promotes professional development and team collaboration.
  • Oversee student wellness leaders and support their involvement in wellness initiatives on campus.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

Licensed as a mental health provider (psychologist, LPC or MFT counselor, or master's level social worker or similar field) in the State of Pennsylvania, or if licensed in another state, by the end of first year in the position. Individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and evaluation experience in a college/university or closely related setting. A minimum of 3-5 years of college counseling or equivalent experience with adolescent or young adult population.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed APA-approved Ph.D. or PsyD in counseling or clinical related field.
  • Previous experience with liberal arts campus and higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Commitment to providing outstanding student service and advocacy.
  • Commitment to fairness, dignity, and justice for all students at the College.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a warm, collegial team environment.
