Assistant Director of Student Niner Media

The Division of Student Affairs is the 3rd largest of 9 divisions at UNC Charlotte with over 500 employees and 20 departments. Nearly 6,000 students live on campus with another 7,800 living within walking distance of campus. There are a range of programs and services that support students’ physical and mental wellbeing, introduce them to campus life and Niner Nation and develop skills and competencies that employers desire. The staff work to create inclusive student-centered learning environments where students excel academically and develop personally into their best selves.
Example of summary of responsibilities: The Assistant Director for Student Niner Media Advising and Support is responsible for advising and providing administrative support to student media organizations, including but not limited to, the student newspaper; literary magazine; and audio, video and other technology media initiatives. The Assistant Director trains and advises student staff, supports and administers media technology and distribution, and provides leadership for departmental assessment efforts. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Student Niner Media Advising and Support.
Essential duties include:
- Provide training, advising, and development for the students within Student Niner Media.
- Provide support for production and distribution of media developed through Student Niner Media, including requisite technology for online media.
- Supervise student employees and interns.
- Provide organizational management and administration support for Student Niner Media organizations and initiatives.
- Provide leadership and coordination of departmental assessment efforts.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Training, Advising, & Development
- Train, advise and assist student leaders on development and production of various forms of media including print, online, podcasting, literary arts, marketing, social media, promotions/events and new technologies.
- Advise students in efforts to recruit, train, lead, and retain students for all Student Niner Media organizations.
- Support and advise student leaders concerning organization constitutions, job descriptions, procedures, and best practices.
- Provide training on and work with students to develop new media opportunities as appropriate.
-Work with the Director on creation and implementation of leadership development and training programs for the Student Niner Media Board.
-Identify and utilize community resources for training and development opportunities.
Media Production & Distribution
- Provide leadership and support for production and distribution of media developed through Student Niner Media, including requisite technology for online media.
- Provide leadership, direction, and support for technology contracts, particularly related to online products.
-Support student creative director and student editors, as appropriate, to ensure on time and accurate production of media materials.
- Advise students in developing and managing both physical and online media distribution.
- Advise students on social media and promotions.
Supervision
- Recruit, hire and supervise all student temporary wage employees.
- Recruit, hire and supervise student interns.
Organization Management
- Provide support for the administration of Student Niner Media organizations and the Student Niner Media Board under the direction of the Director.
- Assist the Director in the administration of the Student Niner Media Advising and Support office.
- Assist in advising the Student Niner Media Board and related Departments under the direction of the Director.
- Attend student media board meetings and serve as an administrative adviser to the board in absence of the Director.
- Continue to keep abreast of media-related ethical and legal issues.
- Work with professional staff on events including fall workshops, retreat, training, orientation events, banquet and others as assigned.
- Develop relationships and become actively involved with media support organizations and officials (eg. College Media Advisers (CMA), College Media Business & Advertising Managers (CMBAM) and the North Carolina College Media Association (NCCMA.)
- Represent the department at University functions and serve on related university committees as assigned.
Provide Leadership for Training and Outreach
- Provide leadership and coordination for training and outreach efforts including:
- Establish and maintain relationships with appropriate academic departments including but not limited to the Communication Studies Department, Broadcast Communication Department, Visual Arts, and Business.
- Establish and maintain relationships with Student Niner Media alumni.
- Promote campus and student media area offerings to the community.
QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications are a bachelor’s degree and two years of media experience; or with an equivalent combination of education and experience.
The preferred qualifications are:
- Master’s degree in related field
- Budget experience
- Supervisory experience
- Knowledge of media law & ethics and AP Style
- Higher education student media advising and training experience
- Media experience that may include print and production, advertising, online, podcasting and/or video
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent administrative and organizational skills
- Operational knowledge of media technology and related trends
