Franklin, MA United StatesDean College's School of Liberal Arts and Sciences is looking for dynamic, experienced, student-centered educators to teach sections of Composition I and Composition II during the fall semester. The College seeks Adjunct Faculty who focus on experiential learning and active engagement in their classrooms. Adjuncts chosen to teach at Dean create a compelling and professional learning environment for students of diverse learning backgrounds.
We are seeking adjunct instructors for English Composition I and English Composition II which are 3-credit courses and meet 3 hours/week in person. The adjunct pay rate is $3,300/section. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach. The Humanities program provides a course charter with course objectives as well as sample syllabi. All faculty are expected to make active use of the learning management system (Canvas) at least at a minimum level established by the College.
The course descriptions are provided below:
ENG-111 Composition I
This course develops the student's ability to think clearly and write effectively. Classroom sessions focus on concept development, organization of ideas, and techniques for writing academic and rhetorical awareness essays, critical analysis of text, and process writing. Lab sessions reinforce skill development. Both formal and informal writing assignments, as well as mostly nonfiction readings, are incorporated throughout the course. Instruction in the following areas is emphasized in all sections: rhetorical awareness, critical thinking, proper use of MLA citations and formatting, introductory research skills, technology for writing, and correctness in grammar and mechanics. Students must achieve a grade of C- or higher to meet the prerequisite for ENG-112. Offered every semester. This course fulfills a College Core requirement
ENG-112 Composition II
This course is a continuation of the two-semester college writing requirement. The coursework continues to emphasize and develop critical thinking and argument in academic writing, and additionally requires independent research writing. The integration of visual elements into formal papers, MLA formatting and documentation, and editing strategies, are also taught and reinforced. Prerequisite: C- or better in ENG-111 or permission of the Dean for the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Preparation, Training, and Experience:
- Master's degree in English, or a related discipline area is required. Ph.D. in a related discipline, preferred.
- Experience teaching composition and literature, preferably with a minimum of three years.
- Experience teaching at the college level is required. Experience teaching first- and second-year undergraduates is preferred.
- Strong computer skills, required.
- Ability and willingness to be responsive and supportive to students through college online resources and digital tools is required.
- Experience with or willingness to learn Canvas, our learning management system, and classroom media is required.
- Expertise in learner-centered teaching is required.
- Experience using technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy is required.
- Experience and ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles is required.
