Associate Director for Residence Life - Academic Initiatives and Staff Training Programs

The Division of Student Affairs is the 3rd largest of 9 divisions at UNC Charlotte with over 500 employees and 20 departments. Example of summary of responsibilities: The Associate Director for Residence Life – Academic Initiatives and Staff Training Programs is a Residence Life leadership role that provides strategic direction for staff supervision, training, and academic-focused residential initiatives. The position leads professional and student staff development, supports learning communities and student success programs, contributes to departmental planning and assessment, and helps ensure effective operations and crisis response across residential communities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Staff Supervision and Development: The Associate Director is responsible for providing leadership, supervision, and development for the staff in their assigned residential communities. Specific responsibilities include:
- Direct supervision of Assistant Directors and an Administrative Support position;
- Indirect supervision of Residence Education Coordinators, Loan Key Operators, Training and Development Specialist, Graduate Hall Advisors and Interns(when applicable), Resident Advisors, and other student employees
Departmental Leadership and Management: The Associate Director is responsible for serving as a member of the Department’s Residence Life Leadership Team which provides overall leadership and direction to the Residence Life unit and shares responsibility for guiding the overall Department. Specific responsibilities include:
- Providing leadership and direction for the recruitment, selection, training and professional development of full-time, graduate, and undergraduate Residence Life staff.
- Serving as liaison with Human Resources and Payroll as it relates to all personnel matters.
- Working with and assisting the Division of Student Affairs and Housing and Residence Life with gathering research, creating reports and all assessment efforts related to Residence Life
- Participating in processes enacted to set policies and/or develop procedures
- Assisting with strategic planning efforts for the Department
- Assisting in the creation, execution, and assessment of the annual goals
- Teaching the Resident Advisors Leadership Course, First-Year Seminar, or other courses (as needed);
- Assisting with divisional projects;
- Creating and maintaining liaison relationships with many campus and community partners, including University Career Services, Human Resources, University College, University Center for Academic Excellence, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life
- Working with internal and external staff to provide comprehensive training and development for professional and graduate staff.
- Serving on a variety of Departmental, Divisional, and University-wide committees and working groups.
- Facilitating sessions in the Resident Advisor Selection Workshop series, Freshman Seminar, or other courses and workshops (as needed)
Community Development and Academic Initiatives: The Associate Director is responsible for working with and supporting the Assistant Director staff and their assigned residential communities to foster a community that enhances the academic, social, and personal development of residential students. Specific responsibilities include:
- Providing guidance and structure for the development, planning, and implementation of a residence education program designed to facilitate student success and student learning
- Providing leadership and effective co-coordination of UNC Charlotte Learning Communities in partnership with Undergraduate Education, including serving on Learning Community Steering Committee
- Facilitating creative and innovative methods for engaging students in co-curricular learning experiences within the residence halls
- Provide direction for the development of relationships with special residential programs and populations, including Greek Village, Global Gateways, Honors, Levine Scholars, and ROTC
Administration: The Associate Director is responsible for working with the Assistant Director staff and their assigned residential communities to ensure that administrative and operational procedures are well managed. Specific responsibilities include:
- Provide leadership for the development and implementation of ongoing program evaluation and assessment of student learning within assigned areas of responsibility
- Assisting staff with the interdepartmental development of relationships with Business Services, Facilities, Assignments, and Technology Services staff
- Contributing to the development and management of the Residence Life budget
- Ensuring that each residence hall community is effectively managed according to University and Department standards
Crisis Management: The Associate Director is responsible for the management and referral of critical incidents; especially those that occur in assigned residential communities but also in providing guidance departmentally. Specific responsibilities include:
- Assisting staff in assigned residential communities in the development of relationships with Police and Public Safety, and other offices necessary to manage crisis situations;
- Ensuring that staff in assigned residential communities maintain awareness of campus response protocols and resources;
- Participating in year-round duty rotation which provides support to the staff and residential population;
- Maintaining awareness of campus response protocols and resources.
- Additional Responsibilities: The Associate Director is responsible for other responsibilities as directed by the Director of Residence Life.
QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications are below:
- Master’s degree (ideally in higher education, counseling and/or student personnel, or a related field)
- Minimum of 5 years progressive professional experience in campus housing, student affairs or a related field.
- Experience supervising graduate or professional staff
- Experience serving in on-call response and/or in crisis management
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Experience with the recruitment, selection, training and ongoing development of full-time and student staff
- Experience with Human Resource functions
- Experience with coordinating Learning Community programs or Academic Initiatives
- Experience supervising graduate and professional staff
- Experience serving in on-call response and/or in crisis management
- Experience with Residential Curriculum
