    The College of the Sciences and Mathematics prepares WCU students to be informed citizens and successful professionals, through academic programs and co-curricular experiences in the computational, mathematical, natural, and social sciences, as well as engineering.

    Reporting to the Department Chair, the Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator maintains teaching lab spaces; sets up and breaks down weekly lab experiments; prepares, analyzes, and labels solutions; gathers data from student samples for instructor evaluation; supervises student employees; collaborates with the Laboratory Stock Clerk to maintain lab needs ;safely handles, stores, and transports chemical waste to designated areas on campus; and provides excellent customer service and support to students, staff, and faculty. 

    The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of chemicals, reagents, and solutions; experience monitoring and maintaining inventory and reports; the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities; excellent organizational skills; attention to detail; and the ability to communicate and collaborate with a diverse campus community.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Maintain neat and organized Chemistry Department teaching lab spaces and stock rooms
    • Hire, train, and supervise student employees
    • Set up and breakdown weekly laboratory experiments
    • Prepare, analyze, and label solutions and reagents
    • Gather data from student samples for instructor evaluation
    • Monitor stock levels and order replacements when necessary
    • Remove and properly dispose of unnecessary or expired inventory
    • Respond to requests to pickup and transport chemical waste to designated areas on campus
    • Collaborate with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) for waste removal from designated areas on campus
    • Monitor and update required Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all stock chemicals 
    • Collaborate with the Department Chair and Stock Clerk to order chemicals, gases, and supplies for teaching labs
    • Place work orders to maintain spaces and equipment
    • Monitor and coordinate instrument repair, calibration, and maintenance
    • Enter purchase requisitions for goods and services 
    • Check empty classrooms to make sure labs are locked and chemicals are secure
    • Assist to move equipment as needed
    • Other duties as assigned

     

  • Minimum Qualifications

  •  

    • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related scientific field
    • Experience preparing reagents and solutions
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, and Excel

     

  • Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Chemical safety and training experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience using inventory control systems  
  • Higher education experience

    Salary and benefits are dictated by the State College and University Professional Association (SCUPA) Collective Bargaining Agreement.
