Architectural Design Faculty - Associate or Full Professor (with tenure)
The School of Architecture is seeking applications and nominations for the following faculty position: Associate or Full Professor (with tenure) in Architectural Design. The position will be available starting July 1, 2023.
About the Notre Dame School of Architecture
The School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame is committed to an architectural pedagogy that is based on the classical and vernacular design traditions of the world. Our curriculum aims to study and renew these traditions by integrating their received design wisdom and meaning with emerging social needs, priorities, understandings and technical advances. It is our goal to prepare our students to address, through architecture, the urban and environmental challenges of contemporary societies worldwide, in order to safeguard our shared future for generations to come.
We hold firm in our belief that architecture and urbanism should be enduring, holistic and appropriate to their culture, climate and context. Current strategic priorities of the School include:
1) Foundational Learning - Commitment to a pedagogy encompassing the entire constructional range of the built world. Exposure of students to diverse design and building traditions as foundational precedents for reference in current architectural practice.
2) Placemaking Variety - Designing buildings, cities, and landscapes in place- and culture-diverse forms that contribute that serve local needs, provide for well-being and identity, and address global challenges.
3) A Mission of Service - Designing for the common good in all projects, and taking active leadership in addressing issues of need, crisis, inequity, and injustice in the physical environment.
4) Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Practice - Engagement in diverse forms of intellectual inquiry, scholarship, and design to generate research- and practice-informed instruction that inspires students to pursue similar paths of excellence as academics and professionals.
5) Advocacy: Local, National, Global - Engagement with academic institutions, professional societies, governmental agencies, and directly with communities to positively influence design and construction practices and improve our shared built environment.
The School is seeking candidates with expertise that have demonstrated interest and accomplishments that incorporate the strategic priorities of the School, and particularly in one or more of the following:
• Classical and vernacular architecture
• Traditional and New Urbanism
Within these parameters, we welcome candidates with secondary expertise in the following areas:
• Traditional building construction and its relationship to environmental sustainability
• History and theory
• Hand drawing and traditional illustration methods
• Other expertise relevant to the mission of the School and the University
Candidates will be expected to teach design studio as well as a seminar or lecture course in their field of expertise, and be also engaged in research or practice at the highest level.
Applicants must have a terminal degree (Master’s or PhD) by the time of appointment, documented excellence in research or practice/creative work and teaching, and an emerging national (for associate professors) and/or international (for full professors) reputation.
