The Assistant Director for Public Purpose Initiatives is responsible for the strategic design and coordination of public purpose initiatives that foster a civic ethos on the TU campus and intentionally connect work for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion with civic and community engagement. The public purpose initiatives include educational, informational, and experiential components and focus on food and housing security among students, environmental sustainability, media literacy, and civic professionalism, among others. The Assistant Director works closely with the Director and Assistant Director for Civic Engagement to connect initiatives strategically to ongoing and new efforts across campus. The Assistant Director coordinates a fellowship program for undergraduate students, supervises one graduate assistant, and reports to the Director.
Responsibilities and Duties
There are 5 core functions to this role:
- Design and coordinate public purpose initiatives,
- Coordinate and produce storytelling focused on change makers, and coordinate public purpose storytelling fellowship program,
- Design and facilitate public purpose workshops,
- Work with the Director to connect public purpose initiatives strategically to ongoing and new efforts across campus,
- Supervisory, leadership, and administrative support: Supervise the Graduate Assistant for Environmental Initiatives, support the Director in assessment efforts, and serve on divisional and university committees, task forces, workgroups.
Design and coordinate public purpose initiatives that foster a civic ethos on the TU campus and intentionally connect work for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion with civic and community engagement. Initiatives include educational, informational, and experiential components and focus on food and housing security among students, environmental sustainability, media literacy, and civic professionalism, among others. Recruit, train, and mentor student leaders to support these initiatives.
Utilize storytelling and public humanities research methods (e.g., photovoice, oral history) to collect and disseminate stories of campus and local change makers. Coordinate a public purpose storytelling fellowship program for undergraduate students. Recruit, train, and mentor student leaders connected to the initiative.
Collaborate with the Director to develop public purpose workshops for a variety of audiences to build individual and collective civic agency among members of the campus community. Facilitate public purpose workshops and train staff, faculty, and students to co-facilitate.
Work with the Director and Assistant Director for Civic Engagement as well as campus partners to connect public purpose initiatives strategically to ongoing and new efforts across campus. Campus partners include BTU, the Center for Student Diversity, the FoodShare, Housing and Residence Life, New Student and Family Programs, the Office of Sustainability, Student Activities, and Student Success Programs. Work with appropriate partners to respond to needs related to public purpose initiatives, including assisting students, staff, and faculty in incorporating relevant educational, informational, and experiential components into their organizations and departments.
Supervise the Graduate Assistant for Environmental Initiatives to provide direction and coordinate their responsibilities. Support the Director in assessment efforts to measure the impact of public purpose initiatives. Work with appropriate campus and community partners to respond to inquiries from environmental agencies. Serve on divisional and university committees, task forces, workgroups, standing committees, and, if applicable, advise student organizations. Participate fully in major University programming and programming sponsored by Student Affairs including, but not limited to, New Student Orientation, Family Weekend, and Commencement. Assist with other duties within Division of Student Affairs as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- Master's degree
- Three years of experience
- Knowledge of higher education settings
- Experience with civic engagement and community engagement programs and initiatives
- Experience working with diverse student populations
- Committed to continuous learning, development, and research on current trends and best practices
- Ability to work with a wide range of students, staff, and faculty in a diverse college setting
- Strong communication skills
- Understanding of and passion for social issues
- Knowledge of best practices for community and civic engagement
- Demonstrated experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously and with limited supervision
- Microsoft Office 365
- Educational background in Anthropology, Global Studies, History, Modern Languages, Political Sciences, Sociology, or a closely related field
- Experience in program development and facilitation
- Experience in training student leaders
- Knowledge of qualitative research methods, community organizing, and storytelling approaches
