The University Recreation Department (UREC) is a vital component within the Division of Student Affairs on the campus of UNC Charlotte. UREC is responsible for the promotion, organization, and administration of structured and self-directed programs, facilities and services to enhance positive recreation and wellness lifestyles of the University community. One of the primary responsibilities of the department is to provide opportunities for participation in a variety of recreational activities and physical fitness programs which satisfy the diverse needs of students, faculty and staff, as well as, where appropriate, guests, alumni, and community participants. UREC is committed to promoting the on-going development of lifetime wellness habits associated with physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being. Moreover, University Recreation seeks to provide a framework for educational, leadership, and development opportunities through participation and employment in recreational programs.

Assistant Director for Outreach & Engagement of UREC

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Assistant Director for Outreach and Engagement position is an integral part of the ongoing functions of the University Recreation Department, as this person is responsible for leading the department’s comprehensive outreach and promotion program. The Assistant Director for Outreach and Engagement must provide a strategic and integrated approach to effectively promote, execute and evaluate departmental programs and services; provide leadership and direction for all outreach and promotion efforts for University Recreation; and provide assessment feedback and refine, improve and enhance future strategic planning. Also, this position will be accountable for contributing to a positive, friendly work environment that encourages, enhances, and demonstrates collaboration, teamwork, and professionalism among staff, students, and patrons on a daily basis. 

In addition, the Assistant Director for Outreach and Engagement at UNC Charlotte is responsible for advancing the University Recreation brand through managing messages of recreation and healthy lifestyle education, and promotion of services and programs offered to the campus community by the department using the visual presence of the department website, social media, digital screens, emails, newsletters, information tables, etc.

Also, in conjunction with the Student Affairs Marketing and Communications team, this position has responsibility for assisting with the planning, directing, creating, and producing of marketing and promotional program plans and materials; and the planning and implementation of the unit branding strategy for the Health & Wellbeing Unit (including UREC – University Recreation, CAPS – Counseling and Psychological Services, CWP – Center for Wellness Promotions, and SHC – Student Health Center).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Business, Marketing, Sports Administration, Leisure/Recreation or Physical Education, College Student Personnel or related field
  • 3 or more years of related professional experience
  • Demonstrated experience leading, promoting and/or implementing aspects of diversity, equity or inclusion into the work environment (i.e., what have you done)
  • Demonstrated understanding of the challenges facing students from historically underrepresented populations enrolled on a predominantly white campus (i.e., what do you know)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well in groups, collaborate with others and embrace diversity
  • Experience supervising and training both professional and student staff
  • Demonstrated experience with fiscal management of a comprehensive promotional program
  • Knowledge of an integrated and/or strategic marketing planning process, effective data analysis, and market research experience essential to be effective
  • Leadership and customer service skills are key attributes of this person
  • Self-motivated; ability to work independently and as a member of a diverse team
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Mac, MS Office suite and Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of various social media (i.e., TikTok, Twitter, SnapChat, Instagram, Facebook, etc.) and web content management systems (i.e., Drupal)
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed
