Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Multimedia is a visual storyteller with a creative mind, innovative ideas, passion, enthusiasm and high energy. This position coordinates the development, production and distribution of digital video and photo projects on all platforms, including social media, to support daily marketing and news operations. The Assistant Director is an idea-rich individual who is constantly pursuing creative projects that tell the story of CMU in ways that engage multiple audiences on multiple platforms in measurable ways. The projects may focus on student experiences, faculty expertise on trending news, faculty and student research or creative endeavors, human interest stories, social media spots, commercials and events. This person has a deep curiosity to learn and stay current on the latest trends in multimedia production on all platforms to communicate messages and successfully engage with multiple audiences in measurable ways. They are adventurous and innovative in their ideas and execution, and are inspired by those who do it best. Reporting to the Associate Director of Photography and Multimedia, the Assistant Director collaborates with other content creators within University Communications, including writers, web designers, photographers and other multimedia producers on strategic multimedia projects from the conceptual development stages, throughout the implementation, to delivery of the finished product via multiple channels. Video productions include but are not limited to planning, scouting, storyboarding, conducting interviews, directing interview subjects, preparing sets, getting props, composing shots, shooting and editing content with superb quality and speed. The Assistant Director is responsible for all the pre- and post-production activities. A firm command on animation and/or motion graphics as part of post production is a must. Also, the position ensures that programs contain appropriate licensing rights for use of music or other intellectual property; scout and secure film shoot locations and props; review scripts; and hire technical extra help personnel as appropriate. The producer is expected to deliver the highest quality of work and show a great amount of flexibility and ability to multitask, change direction on a whim and work at a great speed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional video and multimedia production experience.
  • Proficiency in motion graphics, video recording, audio recording, animation, etc.
  • Proficiency in shooting still photos in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to tell stories visually and create compelling and inspiring narratives.
  • Experience shooting with Canon DSLR cameras and digital video cameras.
  • Video editing proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite, with an emphasis on After
  • Effects and Premiere Pro.
  • Energetic and positive.
  • Strong knowledge of the latest trends and best practices in successful and measurable audience engagement through multimedia projects.
  • A strong familiarity with social media platforms and the latest trends and best practices for multimedia applications.
  • Be available occasionally evenings and weekends and have an appreciation of a solution-oriented work environment that is not bound by a 8-5 mentality.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and project management skills.

  • Experience with cinematography lighting is a plus (lighting interviews, sets, etc.)
