The Director reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Programs and Planning and is responsible for overseeing and coordinating internal and external reporting of official College data; conducting research studies and analyses in support of planning and decision making; leading a comprehensive campus wide initiative on data standards and data governance; managing staff in the Office of Institutional Research; and collaborating with others in promoting institutional effectiveness in order to advance the strategic, academic, and administrative goals of the College.
Management and Oversight of Institutional Research
- Support campus capacity to use data to respond to external demands and inform strategic campus priorities.
- Collect, analyze, interpret, and report data, ensuring that data are collected accurately, analyzed rigorously, used appropriately, and shared with stakeholders to make data-informed decisions.
- Collaborate with others to continuously improve the institution's processes for data collection, analyses & reporting activities.
- Lead qualitative and quantitative research efforts as needed for academic and administrative departments, producing actionable written reports of research findings.
- Determine project prioritization.
- Process institutional data (collecting, cleaning, recoding, organizing, extracting, analyzing, and summarizing data) for internal use, consortia use (i.e., HEDS, ACM, WAICU), external surveys (i.e., U.S. News and World Report, college guidebooks, rankings) and government and agency compliance reporting (e.g. CDS, IPEDS, NCAA).
- Supervise the administration of student, faculty, and staff surveys, their analyses, and the presentation/publication of results.
- In collaboration with campus leadership, set the strategic direction and priorities for IR projects, data governance policies, and communications.
- Ensure review and shaping of IR policies by staying abreast of the higher ed landscape.
- Help develop an integrated Division of Institutional Effectiveness comprising Institutional Research, Academic Planning, and Assessment, Program Review and Accreditation
- Partner with college leaders to expand our capacity to make data-informed decisions in academic departments and other areas of the college.
- Lead the data governance program.
Management of Institutional Research Office Staff and Budget
- Manage the budget and operations of the Institutional Research office.
- Supervise the staff, consisting of an assistant director and an institutional research analyst.
Experience and Qualifications
Education required: Master's Degree
- Master's Degree in analytical discipline, such as educational research, public policy, or related field (doctorate preferred). Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.
- Minimum five years of experience in institutional research in an institution of higher learning or other similar setting.
- In-depth knowledge of research methods in the social sciences and advanced multivariate statistical analysis techniques.
- A thorough familiarity with the academic enterprise within a private College and knowledge of key issues and concepts in higher education.
- Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by the preparation of comprehensive research reports and executive summaries that present complex or technical information in an easily understood fashion.
- Highly developed organizational and leadership skills; ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals and diverse groups; demonstrated success working collaboratively with administrators, faculty, and staff.
- Demonstrated competency in working with relational database systems.
- Demonstrated competency in statistical analysis software such as SAS, SPSS, and STATA and data visualization software, including Tableau.
- Ability to prioritize multiple and varied projects and initiatives.
