Upper School Dean of Boarding-July 2020 (or sooner)

Sandy Spring Friends School

20860, MD United States

Full-time, Exempt, 11 months, Housing Included

The Upper School (grades 9-12) seeks candidates to join the Upper School’s administrative leadership team with a primary focus on the co-educational Boarding Program. Our goal is to fill this position as soon as possible, but a start date as late as July 1st can be accommodated.

In the context of a Day-Boarding Upper School with approximately one-third boarding students (100), SSFS's Boarding Program consists of two established dormitory facilities (one on-campus, one off-campus) and a robust host family program. The program serves domestic and international boarders from 16 countries. Guided by Quaker practices and testimonies, the Dean of Boarding will lead a team of professionals dedicated to creating an inclusive and engaged community that integrates boarding into the whole life of the School. With oversight and responsibility for the entire Boarding Program, the Dean will develop and implement a boarding curriculum that includes academic supports and meaningful programmatic activities. Essential to the success of this position are a willingness to serve as an active presence in the School, an eagerness to engage with students and staff, and the ability to communicate effectively with students, families, SSFS employees, and the larger school community. The Dean reports to the Head of Upper School and works collaboratively with the entire Upper School administration. This position requires living on campus as well as an evening and weekend presence. On-campus housing is provided as a condition of employment.

Requirements: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred), demonstrated experience leading a boarding program of domestic and international adolescents, comfort using technology in support of professional and administrative functions, and commitment to Quaker beliefs, values, and practices. Strong candidates will have a demonstrated record of successful leadership with superior interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Candidates with experience living and teaching internationally are desirable. For all positions, SSFS seeks community members who value the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and can both share and understand differing points of view.

At times, transporting students in a school vehicle will be necessary; therefore, the Dean of Boarding position requires a valid driver's license and insurance approval through the School's carrier. Possession of a CDL (Commercial Driver's License) is a plus. Certifications for First Aid, CPR/AED, and Med-tech will be required with training support provided by the School if necessary.

Physical Requirements: The ability to navigate stairs as part of daily routines; mobility around a large campus with uneven pavement; bending and squatting as required to participate in activities; lifting/carrying boxes up to 25 pounds; and the ability to maneuver as necessary within a regular classroom and office setting.

Commitment to Diversity: Sandy Spring Friends School embraces the Quaker testimony of Equality and seeks applicants who represent all backgrounds and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We greatly value our diverse student population with 42% of students self-identifying as people of color and 89 international students representing 16 different countries. We actively seek faculty representative of our students’ diversity. Click to learn more about diversity at Sandy Spring Friends School. Special consideration may be given to members of The Religious Society of Friends.
