Job Description:

JOB DESCRIPTION: Quarterly Adjunct Lecturer for Winter 2020


PURPOSE: The Department of Biology at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a Quarterly Adjunct Lecturer (non-tenure-track) to teach a lower-division, non-majors course (one lecture section and one lab section) in Human Biology for Winter 2020. The qualified candidate should have a PhD in a related field. This is a non-exempt, hourly position. The successful candidate will teach no more than one lecture section and one lab section in the quarter. Each quarter is 10 weeks long, with an 11th week set for final examinations.




(1) Terminal degree (Ph.D./MD) in a field closely related to human biology, broadly defined.


(2) Demonstrated excellence in teaching human biology or related field for non-majors at the college level.


(3) Excellent communication skills.


Must be available to teach the lecture Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30-10:10 AM, and lab Wednesdays 2:15 PM-5:00 PM (two half lab sections).






Teaching duties include but are not limited to:


1. Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including:


a. Teaching a course load of no more than two courses per quarter, and no more than four per academic year;


b. Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively;


c. Assigning and evaluating assignments that align with the course description and course learning outcomes, and providing timely feedback to students;


d. Holding regular weekly office hours on campus;


e. Submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline;


f. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses;


g. Where applicable, teaching from an approved syllabus for the University Core courses assigned or working with the Chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.




This position does not require any service duties. You may be invited, but not required, to attend department meetings or activities. This would be compensable (paid) time.
