Franklin & Marshall College has initiated a search for a new Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Weis College House Dean. The Weis College House Dean will be one of a cohort of five House Deans, who are members of a faculty and professional staff team charged with supporting and enhancing the residential and co-curricular experience of students residing in and affiliated with the house. In this role, you will partner with a House Don, a senior member of the Faculty who rotates into the role, to foster a distinctive House community where mutual intellectual and social interests are explored and students develop a sense of identity and association. The College Houses integrate and enrich the academic, residential, and social life of students. Their programs and informal environments are central to the College's education of informed, open-minded and critically inquisitive students and graduates. Each of Franklin & Marshall's College Houses has a distinctive identity that complements and expands the mission and work of Franklin & Marshall as a national liberal arts college.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, the Weis College House Dean is an integral member of the Office of Student Affairs, administering House operations; advising House students and enforcing College policies. House Deans, in collaboration with their Don, house governments and their student House Advisor staff, work to develop a residentially-based academic, cultural, and co-curricular program of activities to develop the whole student. College House Deans and House Dons partner to implement budget priorities and plan expenditure decisions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

·         Facilitate and cultivate a sense of community within the House that encourages good citizenship and promotes the value of living in a diverse community.

·         Cultivate relationships with students and parents in order to provide support and guidance for each student in resolving situations that may arise from time to time.

·         Work with the House student leaders and the Don to ensure the success of the House government. 

·         Facilitate community-building programming in conjunction with the Associate Director for College House Operations and the House government.

·         Provide support and guidance for students within the House who are not performing well academically, particularly those on Academic Advisory.

·         Work with appropriate offices, including the Registrar and the Student Wellness Center, among others, in determining leaves of absence, incompletes, and other exceptional academic arrangements.

·         With the Case Manager, respond to reports regarding students of concern and serve on the Students of Concern group.

·         Facilitate leaves of absence from the College and coordinate reentry for students who have been away.

·         Enforce College policies within the House and, when appropriate, meet with and sanction students who violate those policies.

·         Work closely with the other House Deans, Dons, the Orientation Coordinator and the Orientation Planning Directors (student leaders who plan and implement a House-based New-Student Orientation program). 

·         Work with the Orientation Coordinator in selecting, training and supervising student Orientation Planning Directors.

·         Select, train, and supervise House Advisors (HAs), who provide guidance to new students and who assist in enforcing House rules.

·         Monitor House budgets and make certain that reimbursements and expenditure reports are submitted appropriately, while briefing Dons on funds available.

·         Work collaboratively with the other House Deans as a team on a variety of programs and matters that relate to all the College Houses.

·         Assume responsibility for a collateral responsibility in support of the Division of Student Affairs as needed.

·         Spend several weeks per year in the "dean on call" rotation for the College as a whole.

·         Other duties as assigned.

·         An advanced degree (Master's Degree or higher) with professional experience in student life is strongly preferred.

·         A strong preference will be given to candidates who have college or university experience in student judicial affairs, crisis management and/or residential life staff supervision and program design.

·         Experience with student activities and event planning is desired.

·         An established history of responding effectively in emergency situations.

·         Excellent communication skills, both verbal and in writing, and a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team are critical.

·         An understanding of, experience in, and commitment to the aims of a liberal arts education.

·         Ability to interact in a professional manner with students, faculty and staff; to partner with the House Don and student leaders to promote the College's academic mission; and to initiate, plan, coordinate, and evaluate programs and events in support of the House mission.

·         Demonstrated record of working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.

·         The ability and willingness to provide excellent service and to work in a collegial manner with students, faculty and staff, and other constituencies is essential.

Offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of reference checks, a criminal background verification, Pennsylvania ACT 153 background clearances, and verification of credentials.  The College will coordinate these verifications.
