Current seeks a creative, enterprising and versatile reporter to produce timely and essential news coverage for people who work in public media, including TV, radio and digital media. The reporter has special responsibility for covering public television, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and federal funding of public broadcasting; reporting quickly on developing stories; and taking on in-depth enterprise assignments.
Current’s readers are media professionals looking for insights about how to provide significant audience service on local and national broadcast and digital platforms. Our mission is to help people who work in public media excel at their jobs, build strong institutions and connect with the shared sense of mission that unites the industry.
Current is an editorially independent journalistic service of the American University School of Communication. Our journalism is built on facts, transparency, diversity of opinion and the courage to examine problems and controversies within public media.
The reporter has special responsibility for covering a beat and contributes to collaborative reporting projects with Current’s editorial team and outside contributors.
The reporter produces news coverage for Current’s website and print publication, proposing ideas for delivering fast-turnaround news briefs, in-depth coverage and audience engagement that are consistent with Current’s editorial priorities.
Recognizing high expectations for professionalism among our readers, the reporter aims to meet Current’s standards for writing quality, journalistic integrity, fairness, accuracy, readability, analysis, insight and engagement. They help maintain Current’s expected range and volume of coverage for digital and print publication. Meets firm deadlines, helping to maintain copy flow to editors and timely completion of stories.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Full-time, 35 hours per week
This position is 100% contingent on business revenues and external grant funding
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to make deadlines or cover public media conferences
Occasional travel to cover conferences or for field reporting four to eight times per year
Commensurate with experience
Required Education and Experience
3-5 years of relevant experience
Strong command of journalistic writing and reporting techniques, including collecting and interpreting data
Openness to critical feedback and editing
Preferred Education and Experience
Understanding of the evolving media landscape, particularly noncommercial and nonprofit media business models
Active consumer of public media content
Demonstrated ability to cultivate and build trust with sources
Commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in sourcing
