Job Purpose 

Towson University’s Counseling Center is currently accepting applications for a Business Operations Assistant. Under general supervision, the position provides complex bookkeeping, secretarial, and other clerical support to the Director of the Counseling Center. Requires institutional administrative knowledge and comprehensive knowledge of Counseling Center. Requires skill in administrative forms and procedures, budgetary and business procedures. Requires organizational skill in policy, procedures, and trustworthiness in dealing with confidential matters, both in personnel and in protected medical/ mental health records. Involves tracking and executing business operations of the Counseling Center and providing administrative support to the supervisor. Exercises discretion and frequent independent judgement and action with considerable consequence of error.


The Business Operations Assistant prepares and keeps track of departmental budget and financial operations, revises manuscripts, correspondence, charts, forms, and other materials from copy created by others. Proofreads materials. Assists in the overall smooth operation of the Counseling Center, including stepping in to cover front desk as needed, and maintaining necessary knowledge to cover the desk competently. Handles various business operations of the Counseling Center, such as payments, budget tracking online forms completion and procedural knowledge of the institution. Keeps PeopleSoft and other business records accurate and up to date. Exercises judgment and initiative in establishing and revising complex and sensitive filing systems. Enters, updates and retrieves information stored in files and databases, with consistency in filing methods. Stores items digitally in many cases with Director access. Reviews administrative actions taken with Director.

This position researches, analyzes, and summarizes information and source materials for reports independently and communicates findings orally and in writing. Receives and screens telephone calls and visitors. Independently handles procedural and substantive matters and inquiries which do not require technical knowledge or refers callers to others as appropriate. Makes all necessary arrangements for travel and independently performs required administrative follow-up and recordkeeping. Advises Director on administrative needs and keeps Director informed.


High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience providing administrative support is required. The selected candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to proofread and edit a variety of documents; skills in various computer software packages, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to interact effectively with internal and external parties in a courteous and efficient manner; and the ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and execute multiple and continuing assignments with general instruction. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree or equivalent educational attainment or professional experience preferred.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

A Criminal Background Investigation is required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.

Salary and Benefits
