The Strengths-Based Supervisor

As they rise through the ranks, many people end up supervising others. Unfortunately, this incredibly important role rarely comes with much, if any, training. This often leaves supervisors struggling to figure out how to manage and lead their team while juggling all their other responsibilities. Most books and trainings offer general advice or techniques. The frustration is that implementing those practices can be tricky because everyone has different talents, so not everything will work for everyone.
Using a Strengths-based framework (specifically CliftonStrengths) can help you identify the ways in which your talents filters the way you approach leadership and all the other tasks for which you are responsible. When you know and understand your talents, you can use them to become a more effective supervisor in a way that’s authentic to you. The most effective leaders consistently invest in their Strengths and those of their team.

Anne Brackett has worked in student affairs for over 20 years. She has a master’s degree in higher education and is a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach and Engagement Champion. Anne has been coaching and training supervisors, teams, student leaders, and students using the Strengths framework (CliftonStrengths/StrengthsFinder) for over five years, in addition to implementing a campus-wide, Strengths initiative at her previous institution. After working at her last institution for 12 years, Anne left campus to start Strengths University. Strengths University is focused on leadership development in higher education using a Strengths-based approach.
Alicia Wojciuch has worked in student affairs for over 10 years. She has an MSW and is a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, Facilitator in Strengths Based Education, and Instructor in Strengths Based Education. Alicia has been coaching and training supervisors, teams, student leaders, and students using the Strengths framework (CliftonStrengths/StrengthsFinder) for over five years, in addition to implementing a campus-wide, Strengths initiative at her previous institution. Alicia currently works as a Lead Life Coach at Maryville University. She is a cofounder of Strengths University.
