Supporting African American Students

Winter 2006 - course #3
Instructor: Gailda P. Davis
REGISTRATION CLOSED

Course Overview:
The percentage of African American students enrolled in college has steadily increased over the past two decades. African Americans make up approximately 12% of the total college enrollment at degree-granting institutions nationally and less than 10% of the total degrees conferred nationally. According to recent studies, 88% of African American students attend Predominately White Institutions of higher education. These students face unique challenges on their college campuses, and colleges are often challenged in turn to aid these students in successful completion of a degree program. In this course students will learn about:

  • Key factors in the college experience of African American students.
  • Theories related to African American student development.
  • College adjustment, satisfaction, and perceptions of African American students.
  • Persistence factors, marginality, and coping strategies related to African American students.
This course will also provide students with a chance to look at further research on African American college students, examine sources of support and services on college campuses for African American students, and identify such support agents on your college campus.
