Course Overview:
This three week short course is geared to new, entry-level professionals and will provide participants with the opportunity to focus on their entry into a professional position in student affairs. In particular, we will look at supervision, how to be a strong supervisee, building a support network on campus, networking in the profession and professional ethics.

Lectures, readings, participation on a discussion board, and case studies will be utilized as the learning tools for this course. Participants will examine various new professional issues and discuss techniques for working through them.

  • Basic supervision resources
  • Tools for becoming a solid staff member and supervisee
  • An understanding of professional ethics
  • Understanding of the importance of networking and professional development
  • Develop a set of professional goals for the year

  • Module 1: Supervision: The Basics - Tuesday, July 8
  • Discussion : Wednesday, July 9
  • Module 2: How to be a strong supervisee: Managing your Supervisor - Thursday, July 10
  • Discussion: Friday, July 11
  • Module 3: Networking: On and Off Campus- Tuesday, July 15
  • Discussion: Wednesday, July 16
  • Module 4: Developing Professional Ethics - Thursday, July 17
  • Case Study Posted: Friday, July 18
  • Case Studies Responses: Monday, July 21
  • Module 5: Developing Professional Goals - Tuesday, July 22
  • Goals Posted: Thursday, July 24
  • Course Summary and Evaluation - Friday, July 25

Participant Expectation: Participants should plan to spend approximately 4 to 5 hours per week in this course. This will include time to read materials, complete case studies and participate in asynchronous on-line discussions. Participants will need to log on for course content that will be posted as indicated in the timeline. In addition participants will need to respond to questions posted on the discussion board each week. As the discussion board is asynchronous, students may check in and post at their convenience. This learning tool will be an important part of participant's learning experience.

Instructor Bio:
Darese Doskal-Scaffido is currently Associate Director for Residential Life and Judicial Affairs at Ithaca College. She has held various positions in Residential Life and Judicial Affairs for 16 years at Indiana State University, University of Connecticut and Ithaca College. She has a Masters Degree in College Student Personnel from Indiana State University and an Undergraduate degree in Psychology from Northwestern University.
