Summer 2006 - course #5
Online Advising Workshop

Summer 2006 - course #5
Instructor: Anita Crawley
CLOSED

Course Overview:
The Net Generation is coming to campus expecting to receive more and more student services at a distance. Universities and colleges that make administrative services such as online application, registration, and payment available to students set the tone. Students want other services available 24/7.

As academic advisors, are we prepared to meet student expectations while still providing a personal touch? Are there some aspects of academic advising that are better delivered via web based resources? What about FERPA & issues of confidentiality? These and other questions will be considered in this one week workshop.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this workshop, active participants will::

  • Become aware of benefits and concerns of online advising.
  • Brainstorm good practices & strategies for effective use of email advising.
  • Consider other tools and approaches for delivering academic advising at a distance.

Course Outline:
In this workshop students will explore academic advising resources and recommendations from the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications (WCET). Participants and the instructor will share how their institutions are delivering or planning to deliver academic advising at a distance. We will discuss the benefits and concerns of implemented online advising services.

Individuals registering for CEUs will receive 1.0 CEU upon successful completion of the course.
