Diversity in American Higher Education

Course Overview:
This four week course will engage how issues of diversity and multiculturalism have impacted higher education in the United States. Special attention will be paid to the policies which have impacted and shaped the structural exclusion and inclusion of groups throughout the history of higher education; and the particular issues connected to the recruitment and retention of students, faculty, and administrators from underrepresented groups.

Course Outline:
The course will contain two modules, each 2 weeks in length. The first module will deal with the policies and laws which have shaped the experiences and interaction of underrepresented groups in the United States with higher education. The second module will engage students in reading and discussion about issues regarding the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students, faculty, and administrators.

Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to

  • Discuss the historical origins which account for the underrepresentation of certain groups in American higher education
  • Be aware of the current laws and policies which pertain to underrepresented groups in American higher education
  • Analyze and critique current thoughts with regards to the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students, faculty, and administrators
  • Forulate and improve strategies for the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students, faculty, or administrators depending on their responsibilities at their home

Participant Expectations:
Students are expected to complete the required readings, engage the issues raised in the course, participate in discussions with other students and the instructor about the issues raised, challenge and support the learning and growth of other students, and open themselves to enhancing their own learning and growth.

Individuals registering for CEUs will receive 1.0 CEU upon successful completion of the course.

Instructor Bio:
Dafina Lazarus Stewart is an assistant professor of College Student Personnel and Higher Education at Ohio University. She completed her doctorate and master's degrees in Higher Education at The Ohio State University. She has experience in multicultural affairs and diversity issues in both the liberal arts and public university contexts, as well as in other aspects of student affairs administration. Dafina Stewart is also the author of publications nationally and internationally on issues ranging from her research on student development to diversity practices and the situation of women in research universities.
