New Professional Basics

Course Overview:
This one week short course is geared to new, entry-level
professionals and will provide participants with the opportunity to
focus on their entry into a professional position in student affairs.
In particular, we will look at supervision, how to be a strong
supervisee, building a support network on campus, networking in the
profession and professional ethics.
Lectures, readings, participation on a discussion board will be
utilized as the learning tools for this course. Participants will
examine various new professional issues and discuss techniques for
working through them.
Learning Outcomes:
- Basic supervision resources
- Tools for becoming a solid staff member and supervisee
- An understanding of professional ethics
- Understanding of the importance of networking and professional development
- Develop a set of professional goals for the year
Participant Expectations:
Participants should plan to spend approximately 5 to 8 hours over the
week in this course. This will include time to read materials,
complete case studies and participate in asynchronous on-line
discussions. Participants will need to log on for course content that
will be posted as indicated in the timeline. In addition participants will need to respond to questions posted on
the discussion board during the week. As the discussion board is asynchronous, students may check in
and post at their convenience. This learning tool will be an
important part of participant's learning experience.
Proposed Timeline: (subject to pace of course)
- Introductions and Module 1: Supervision: The Basics - Monday
- Module 2: Networking: On and Off Campus- Tuesday
- Module 3: Developing Professional Ethics and Case Study - Wednesday
- Module 4: Developing Professional Goals and share goals - Thursday
- Course Summary and Evaluation - Friday
Participants should plan to spend approximately 4 to 5 hours per week in this course. This will include time to read materials, complete case studies and participate in asynchronous on-line discussions. Participants will need to log on for course content that will be posted as indicated in the timeline. In addition participants will need to respond to questions posted on the discussion board each week. As the discussion board is asynchronous, students may check in and post at their convenience. This learning tool will be an important part of participant's learning experience.
Individuals registering for CEUs will receive 1.0 CEU upon successful
completion of the course.
Instructor Bio:
Darese Doskal-Scaffido is currently Associate Director for
Residential Life and Judicial Affairs at Ithaca College. She has held
various positions in Residential Life and Judicial Affairs for 15
years at Indiana State University, University of Connecticut and
Ithaca College. Her work with new professionals has included being
one J, serving as Region 1 Coordinator for the New Professionals and
Graduate Students Network for 2 years (and serving on the committee
for many!) and overseeing new staff training for 6 years. She has a
Masters Degree in College Student Personnel from Indiana State
University and an Undergraduate degree in Psychology from
Northwestern University.
