Course Overview:
Assisting students in assessing their learning styles, time management
and study skills habits, as well as their career interests can be a daunting task. This three-week course will examine online self-assessment tools that can be used to help students begin the self-discovery process. The course will concentrate on evaluating the quality and usefulness of information from identified websites and integrating these resources into student services work. Course discussions will center on utilization of the Internet to enhance student success. This course is designed for those in direct services Student Affairs positions.
Course Outline:
Participants will be encouraged to explore identified web sites that might be used to enhance student success. The instructor will provide access to websites that she has created or to web based self-assessment tools. Participants will discuss various issues related to encouraging students to use self-help tools. Using Internet resources in the context of our work is relatively new. While it provides great possibilities, it also presents significant challenges. These topics will be explored in depth on the Discussion Board where we will "come together" at times convenient to you, for what I hope will be a thought provoking interchange.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, active participants will:

- Develop an activity that integrates a self-assessment tool into your work with students
Expectations of Participants:
Participants should expect to devote about 5 hours during each week of this three weeks course in order to read the online materials, fully participate in the online discussions and submit the online assignments. The final project for the course is to develop an Internet self-help activity that is appropriate for your setting.
This will be administered as an asynchronous class which means participants can log on whenever they wish and whatever location they have Internet access. The Discussion Board is the focus of online learning in this course. There will be no "real time" meetings for this course. On the Discussion Board, we will spend time pondering the benefits and challenges presented by the availability of online self-assessment tools. Active participation will significantly enhance the learning experience and help bring the course material to life. Participation in the online discussion is critical to your success in the class and is expected of each student.
